Background & Need

Everyone learns differently, and how people learn in-person can be different from how people learn in an online setting. Children and teenagers learn by observing, listening, exploring, experimenting and asking questions. Being interested, motivated and engaged in learning is important for young people. What does effective learning look like to you, and how can technology facilitate that?

Maine has always been a forerunner in creating “technology-enhanced educational experiences for all students.” Places like Maine Virtual Academy (MEVA) have been running courses online for five years now, pioneering ways in which online classrooms could look like when they’re designed specifically to be virtual. Maine was one of 11 states to receive U.S. Department of Education’s Rethink K-12 Education Modeling Funding with its “Rethinking Remote Education Ventures (RREV)” project in 2020. Aligning our technological innovations with fundamental learning theories will be key for greater, long lasting impact.

How might technology be used to create exciting and meaningful learning experiences that help young people develop the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career?
